FigCraft vs Figma: Features, File Compatibility & Trade-offs

Compare the tasks you need to finish before deciding to switch.

Start with the decision

Personal practice, offline UI design, a native Linux app or control over open-source software are reasons to try FigCraft. If your project depends on complex .fig files, specific Figma plugins or an established team workflow, keep the original environment and test a copy before migrating.

FigCraft follows a familiar workflow but remains alpha software. This is a sourced comparison of features and limits, not a same-file hands-on review, speed ranking or replacement score.

Both have free options. What changes the decision?

Figma Starter is free, so “FigCraft is free and Figma is paid” is an inaccurate comparison. FigCraft also offers open-source licensing, local files and native Linux packages. Whether you need a paid Figma plan depends on team libraries, developer handoff and organization requirements.

Switching also costs time: fonts, file repairs, replacement plugins and collaboration habits all matter. Subscription price alone can miss the work of rebuilding a design system.

Can you move Figma files to FigCraft?

Upstream calls .fig import best effort. Opening a file, saving a native .figcraft document and exporting an editable file that reopens in Figma are three separate checks. “It opens” does not mean “fully compatible.”

  1. Keep the original design and prepare a shareable copy. Record its fonts, frames, components and key interactions.
  2. Open the .fig copy in your target FigCraft version and compare the canvas and layer structure with the original environment.
  3. Edit text, auto layout, component instances and variables. Check that changes propagate correctly.
  4. Save a new .figcraft file, close it and reopen it to inspect the saved edits.
  5. Export the required delivery format and inspect it in the recipient’s environment. If you need to return to Figma, verify that path separately; PNG export does not establish editable-file compatibility.

This is a migration checklist to carry out, not a completed test. Browser .fig import, complex round trips and production design systems have not been verified here.

Assess collaboration, plugins and privacy

FigCraft live collaboration is a preview. Check edit/view links, undo, reconnection and document recovery, rather than only looking for multiplayer cursors. Online sharing uses a server whose operator can read the document; links or codes control access.

FigCraft’s plugin system differs from Figma’s. List essential plugins and test alternatives individually. CLI or MCP support does not establish equivalent plugins or include a free AI model service.

If your team needs membership management, permissions, reviews and long-term file retention, make them migration acceptance criteria. For confidential work, confirm the actual sharing server and access method.

Choose the next step for your scenario

  • Learning layout and components: try a small FigCraft sample and inspect it after saving and reopening.
  • Working locally on Linux: pick the matching architecture and test fonts, input and saving.
  • Receiving client .fig files: compare a shareable copy with the original, including complex components and fonts.
  • Depending on team libraries and plugins: preserve the current workflow until a complete task passes.
  • Retouching photos or drawing illustrations: choose PhotoCraft or VectorCraft by task; similar names do not make FigCraft the right tool.

Sources, versions and comparison scope

Documentation checked October 16, 2026, using FigCraft v0.6.0 and Figma’s official plans/features page on that date. Feature descriptions come from documentation; scenario recommendations are editorial judgments. No installation, same-file comparison, compatibility or performance test was performed for this page.

FigCraft vs Figma FAQ

Can FigCraft fully replace Figma today?

A feature list cannot establish that. Upstream still labels it alpha; verify your files, plugins and collaboration requirements.

Can existing Figma plugins run directly?

FigCraft uses its own WebAssembly plugin system. Find and test alternatives individually.

Which should a solo user try first?

Try a FigCraft sample if offline use, native Linux or open-source control matters. If existing team and file workflows matter most, verify a complete migration first.
