CADCraft vs AutoCAD: 2D Drafting, DXF/DWG and Current Limits

Compare CADCraft with AutoCAD using official documentation and a verified small CADCraft sample. Check file fidelity before switching your CAD workflow.

Choose by the drawing you must deliver

CADCraft is worth trying for simple 2D drafting practice and evaluating open-source workflows. If your work depends on complex DWG entities, custom objects, SHX fonts, specialized toolsets or verified client deliverables, first check a copy in the application your recipient uses. A familiar command line does not establish equivalent behavior.

CADCraft vs AutoCAD: evidence and limits
NeedCADCraft v0.6.2AutoCAD
Access and licensingMIT / Apache-2.0 open-source project; independent hosted browser build.Commercial product; Autodesk lists purchase and trial options. Check regional terms.
Basic 2D draftingRectangle, circles, layer and linear dimension verified in our Windows sample.Official documentation covers precision 2D drafting and annotations.
DXF / DWGOur simple DXF and CADCraft-generated DWG each reopened with four entities in CADCraft. Unsupported entities may be lost.Autodesk documents DWG/DXF version options; verify files in the recipient’s exact version.
3D and specialized toolsNot verified; v0.6.2 release notes identify some unavailable commands, including 3DORBIT.Official AutoCAD documentation includes solids, surfaces, meshes and specialized toolsets.
Fonts and custom objectsSHX and unsupported entity retention require special attention; our sample contains no text.Check actual fonts, object dependencies and deliverables in the intended Autodesk workflow.
Browser workflowOur local Chromium check imported, edited, downloaded and reopened a simple DXF.Autodesk documents AutoCAD Web drawing commands and cloud storage integrations.
Automation and AICLI and MCP are documented; no generative design feature was tested.Autodesk documents AutoLISP, APIs and AI-assisted drafting features; check the relevant product.

What our sample proves

The Windows portable ZIP matched its published checksum. The running app added a circle, an annotation layer and a 100-unit width dimension; the saved DXF reopened with one polyline, two circles and one dimension. CLI conversion to DWG and reopening within CADCraft retained those counts. We also rendered PNG from the reopened DXF. This checks CADCraft’s own round trip, not fidelity in AutoCAD.

Before moving an existing CAD project

  1. Keep a backup and inventory entities, fonts, references, units and layouts in the original application.
  2. Open a copy in CADCraft. Inspect warnings, dimensions, text, blocks and sheet scales.
  3. Save to a new filename and reopen in both CADCraft and the recipient’s application. Compare object structure and plotted output, not just a screenshot.
  4. If a required object or plot changes, keep the existing production workflow and report a minimal safe example upstream.
